Roman Abramovich ‘to hand Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel £150m to spend this summer’

Roman Abramovich ‘to hand Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel £150m to spend this summer’, despite paying £253m for new players just 12 months ago as the Blues weigh up moves for Erling Haaland and Romelu Lukaku with a new striker top priority

  • Thomas Tuchel will reportedly have £150m to spend for Chelsea this summer
  • The German has led the Blues to the Champions League and FA Cup finals
  • Chelsea spent £253m on new talent last summer but Frank Lampard was sacked
  • A striker is high on the list of demands with links to Dortmund’s Erling Haaland

Roman Abramovich is set to hand Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel a whopping £150million to spend on improving his squad this summer, according to reports.

Tuchel has had an immediate impact since replacing Frank Lampard at Stamford Bridge in January, taking the Blues into the top four as well as the Champions League and FA Cup finals.

Chelsea spent £253m on new talent last summer under Lampard, bringing in the likes of Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Edouard Mendy and Hakim Ziyech.

But, according to The Sun, Tuchel is going to be back to the tune of £150m this summer as he tries to hunt down Manchester City in the Premier League.

Chelsea’s board are ‘delighted’ with Tuchel’s work since arriving in west London and the German will now be given funds to improve particular areas of his squad.

The Blues are in desperate need of a proven goal scorer with Olivier Giroud and Tammy Abraham both expected to leave the club.

Werner, who joined from RB Leipzig last season, has only managed 12 goals in 48 appearances after struggling for confidence in front of goal.

Chelsea have been linked with Erling Haaland but face competition for the Borussia Dortmund starlet’s signature from a host of top European clubs.

Moves for either Harry Kane or Romelu Lukaku have also both been talked up but it remains to be seen if the England captain would move to Tottenham’s London rival and if the Inter star wants to return to his former club.

Earlier this week, Tuchel said he does not want to dent the harmony and optimism at the club by discussing possible transfers before the end of the season.

The German had issues with transfer strategy at Paris Saint-Germain before he was sacked last year and he is determined to avoid similar problems at Chelsea.

‘Transfer periods can be mood breakers,’ he told reporters ahead of Wednesday’s defeat by Arsenal.

‘(At Chelsea) it has been only about coaching. No second thoughts about bringing somebody in or letting somebody go.

‘A big part of my personality is on coaching and guiding my team and pushing it to the limit… I have zero ambition to ruin this atmosphere for myself or anybody else.

‘Do we have some ideas how to improve the squad? Yes, but will we fight about it? No. We will discuss it and first of all we will finish this season.’

Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso admits he was ‘very EMOTIONAL’ after netting winner against Man City

Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso admits he was ‘very emotional’ after scoring the winning goal against Man City, as full back speaks out on ‘tough season’ on the bench at Stamford Bridge

  • Marcos Alonso netted a late winner for Chelsea against Manchester City
  • The Spaniard said it was ’emotional’ for him after a very ‘tough’ season
  • His time at Chelsea looked to be on the ropes under the helm of Frank Lampard
  • He has featured more regularly though since the appointment of Thomas Tuchel

Marcos Alonso has admitted he was ‘very emotional’ after netting Chelsea’s late winner against Manchester City on Saturday.

Hakim Ziyech cancelled out Raheem Sterling’s opener, before the Spanish full-back netted to seal the victory against a side they will meet again in the Champions League final on May 29.

It has been a difficult season for Alonso, with his Chelsea career looking to be on the ropes under the helm of previous manager Frank Lampard.

Since the appointment of Thomas Tuchel, Alonso has got himself back into the team on a rotation basis with last summer’s new signing Ben Chilwell.

After the game, Alonso told Chelsea’s official website that it was an emotional moment for him to score the winner.

He said: ‘I’m very happy, especially because it’s been a tough season.

‘I do my best every time I play to put pressure on the manager and try to play more. That’s what I want and I think every time I play I’ve done well so that’s what I need to keep doing.

‘With the goal, it was very emotional and I’m very happy for that.’

Alonso was exiled from Lampard’s squad following the £50m signing of Chilwell from Leicester.

He failed to make the matchday squad in 16 successive Premier League games, and it looked like his time at Stamford Bridge was coming to an end.

Since Tuchel has come in he has started eight league games out of a possible 16.

Alonso who has scored twice since coming back into the team, is hoping to end the season on a high and prove that he should start against Manchester City in the Champions League final.

He joined Chelsea from Fiorentina in the summer of 2016 and has played 165 times for the club in all competitions, scoring 24 goals.

Raheem Sterling livid that referee and VAR let Kurt Zouma get away with clumsy challenge in the box

‘He put his knee into my hamstring, I knew it was a penalty’: Raheem Sterling incensed that referee and VAR allowed Kurt Zouma to get away with clumsy challenge in the box

  • Raheem Sterling was furious not to be given a penalty after a Kurt Zouma tackle
  • The Manchester City forward said Zouma ‘put his knee’ into Sterling’s hamstring
  • Referee Anthony Taylor waved play on and VAR supported his decision
  • Sterling said it was a ‘sure penalty’ and added he thought VAR ‘was here to help’

Raheem Sterling was furious that both the referee and VAR turned down a Manchester City penalty following Kurt Zouma’s challenge on the England forward.

Chelsea put the brakes on City’s crowning as Premier League champions with a 2-1 comeback victory, with goals from Hakim Ziyech and Marcos Alonso cancelling out Sterling’s opener.

At 1-1 in the second half, Sterling was driving into the box and appeared to be brought down under a clumsy tackle from a retreating Zouma.

Referee Anthony Taylor waved play on, and a VAR check confirmed his no-penalty decision, to Sterling’s bemusement and the 26-year-old vented his frustration after the match.

‘For me I couldn’t get a shot off because he (Zouma) put his knee into the back of my hamstring,’ Sterling told Sky Sports.

‘I’m not sure how it’s not a penalty or how it’s not been reviewed properly, the ref said it has been reviewed but at the end of the day personally I knew it was a penalty.’

When pressed on whether VAR should have told Taylor to take another look at the incident on the pitch-side monitor, Sterling shrugged his shoulders and questioned the review technology.

‘I thought VAR was here to help but wasn’t meant to be,’ he said. ‘He (Taylor) said to me it’s been checked and cleared and not a penalty, but for me it was a sure penalty.’

Sterling’s penalty controversy could have been much less significant for City had Sergio Aguero not embarrassingly missed an attempted Panenka penalty in the first half which would have put Pep Guardiola’s men 2-0 up.

While Chelsea were the stronger side in the second half, City were wasteful in front of goal throughout and Sterling reflected on the team’s missed opportunities.

‘(The defeat is a) Difficult one to take,’ he said. ‘Especially (because) we had chances to finish the game off, we didn’t and got punished.’

‘Frustrated’ Hakim Ziyech is being played OUT of position at No 10, claims Frank Leboeuf

‘Frustrated’ Hakim Ziyech is being played OUT of position at No 10, claims Frank Leboeuf… as former Chelsea defender tells Thomas Tuchel to ‘put him on the right’ because he is a ‘copy-cat’ of Man City star Riyad Mahrez

  • Frank Leboeuf says boss Thomas Tuchel is playing Hakim Ziyech out of position
  • Ziyech arrived at Stamford Bridge for £33million last summer but has struggled
  • He has only been handed 14 starts, scoring five goals and claiming four assists
  • Leboeuf says Tuchel should be playing him on the right rather than in the No.10
  • The former Chelsea star says Ziyech is a ‘copy-cat’ of Man City’s Riyad Mahrez

Former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf claims Thomas Tuchel is playing Hakim Ziyech out of position at No.10.

Ziyech arrived at Stamford Bridge for £33million last summer, but has only started 14 Premier League games for the Blues.

Leboeuf says he understands Ziyech ‘frustration’ and that the German manager should be better playing the Chelsea star on the right hand side as he is a ‘copy-cat’ of Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez.

Speaking of Ziyech’s situation, Leboeuf told ESPN:  ‘I’m concerned about Hakim Ziyech. If he plays, why doesn’t he [Tuchel] put him on the right?

‘I saw him today very frustrated when he came off after playing like a number 10. I don’t think that’s his real position.

‘Tuchel really has to think that Ziyech has to play on the right side. It’s like [Riyad] Mahrez, he’s a copy-cat of Mahrez.

‘I don’t see [Pep] Guardiola putting Mahrez in another position than on the right side.’

Ziyech has struggled to cement a place in Tuchel’s Chelsea side, despite being handed a five-year contract upon his arrival at the club.

The 28-year-old made his 14th Premier League start for Chelsea on Saturday – when they beat Fulham at Stamford Bridge.

However, he was somewhat ineffective as a No.10 and was replaced by N’Golo Kante in the second half.

As it stands, Ziyech has only provided Chelsea with five goals and four assists since his arrival.

Tuchel will be hoping to see more from the Morocco international ahead of the summer transfer window.
