Dayot Upamecano says he came close to signing for Man United aged 17

‘I wanted to sign for them straight away!’ Dayot Upamecano says he came close to signing for Man United aged 17 before turning them down after talks with Red Bull supremo Ralf Rangnick as French defender prepares to leave Leipzig for Bayern Munich

  • Dayot Upamecano is poised to join Bayern Munich from RB Leipzig in summer
  • But his career path could have been quite different if he’d joined Man United
  • They were interested in signing the French defender back when he was 17
  • Upamecano was keen but was persuaded to reconsider by Ralf Rangnick
  • He went on to play for Red Bull Salzburg and then RB Leipzig
  • United were linked with the 22-year-old prior to his agreed move to Bayern

Dayot Upamecano has spoken about how he turned down the opportunity to join Manchester United at the age of 17.

The France international, 22, is now regarded as one of the most accomplished central defenders in world football and is poised to join Bayern Munich from RB Leipzig ahead of next season.

Bayern paid his release clause of £38.5million to bolster their back line – but Upamecano’s career path could have been quite different.

In an interview, he said that United registered their interest in him as a teenager.

‘I was a young boy. I wanted to sign for them straight away,’ he told The Athletic.

‘Manchester United! But then my parents took me aside and said: ‘Let’s think carefully about this.’

Upamecano, who at that stage was in the youth team at French club Valenciennes, was instead persuaded by Ralf Rangnick, then the sporting director at Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig, to join them.

He was moved to Red Bull’s feeder club Liefering in Austria and within a year moved up to Red Bull Salzburg and then on to RB Leipzig in 2017.

Upamecano has since played 151 matches for the Bundesliga side over five seasons but will move on to Bayern this summer. He has made three appearances for France.

He added: ‘We thought about it for a long time and then decided that going ‘etape par etape’ [step by step] was the best option for me. Everything Ralf said came true.’

His reputation has since grown considerably and United were among a number of clubs linked with Upamecano over the past two years.

Upamecano has the opportunity to finish his Leipzig career with a piece of silverware when they take on Borussia Dortmund in the final of the German Cup on Thursday night.

‘Believe me we have a lot of offers for this year, a lot of offers, and good ones,’ Barnett told SNTV, as reported by Goal

‘I mean top, top clubs. We don’t want to rush. There is the right time to move on and playing games is the most important thing at his age.

Bayern Munich’s incoming CEO Oliver Kahn rules out move for Erling Haaland this summer

Bayern Munich’s incoming CEO Oliver Kahn rules out move for Erling Haaland this summer and hits out at ‘unimaginable €100m package’ to prise the star striker from rivals Dortmund this summer

  • Bayern’s Oliver Kahn has ruled out a summer transfer swoop for Erling Haaland
  • The new CEO says a ‘€100m package is unimaginable for Bayern at the moment’
  • Haaland has become one of the most sought after player in European football
  • He has scored 53 goals in all competitions for Dortmund since his arrival in 2020
  • But Kahn believes Robert Lewandowski can carry Bayern for the next few years

Bayern Munich’s new CEO Oliver Kahn has ruled out a summer transfer swoop for Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland.

Haaland has become one of the most sought after player in European football – having scored 53 goals in all competitions for Dortmund since his arrival in January 2020.

However, Kahn – who will succeed Karl-Heinz Rummenigge as CEO later this year – says a ‘€100m package’ is unimaginable for Bayern at the moment and that they can rely on Robert Lewandowski instead.’

Kahn has said those who speak of the transfer rumours ‘don’t understand the situation’.

The current Bayern director, who will take over as CEO, told Bild: ‘Sorry, whoever spoke about that didn’t understand the situation.

‘A package that costs – as we heard – over €100m is unimaginable for FC Bayern at the moment.’

Bundesliga outfit Dortmund are adamant that they will keep their star man – who is contract to the club until 2024.

However, super-agent Mino Raiola was pictured in Spain with Haaland’s father earlier this year to meet with LaLiga giants Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Premier League trio Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United have also all been linked with bringing the striker to England.

Regardless of Haaland’s situation, Kahn is confident Bayern will continue to score goals with Lewandowski in the squad.

He said: ‘Robert still has a two-year contract here. His performances cannot be questioned. He’s scored 39 goals [in the Bundesliga] so far!

‘Just for that, we don’t have to think about Haaland today. Robert can keep this level for a few more years.’

Lewandowski has scored a total of 46 goals across all competitions this season and is expected to add more to his tally.

Bayern Munich 6-0 Borussia Moenchengladbach: Hosts celebrate ninth successive title in style

Bayern Munich 6-0 Borussia Moenchengladbach: Hosts celebrate ninth successive Bundesliga title in style as Robert Lewandowski nets hat-trick in rout

Bayern Munich celebrated their record-extending ninth consecutive Bundesliga title on Saturday with a 6-0 demolition of Borussia Moenchengladbach and a hat-trick from Robert Lewandowski, who edged closer to a 49-year-old scoring record.

The champions had sealed the title before kick-off following RB Leipzig’s 3-2 defeat at Borussia Dortmund earlier on Saturday.

Lewandowski, who now has 39 goals, one shy of Gerd Muller’s imposing record of 40 league goals in one Bundesliga season dating back to 1971/72, needed only two minutes to open his account with a shot from a tight angle.

Thomas Muller, who along with David Alaba becomes the first player in Bundesliga history to win 10 league titles, stabbed in their second in the 23rd before a sensational flying Lewandowski volley 11 minutes later.

With Gladbach in the role of mere observers, Lewandowski then set up Kingsley Coman, who wrapped up a quick break with a powerful shot a minute from halftime.

Lewandowski sent keeper Yann Sommer the wrong way to convert a 66th minute penalty for his hat-trick and a clear shot at Muller’s record with two games left.

Tanguy Nianzou was sent off in the 75th with a straight red card for a rustic challenge five minutes after coming on, but even with 10 men Bayern scored again, with Leroy Sane slotting in four minutes from the end.

Bayern, who have now won 30 Bundesliga titles since the introduction of the top division in 1963, and 31 German league crowns in total, are on 74 points, with Leipzig in second on 64 following their 3-2 loss at Dortmund, who move up to fourth.

Bayern may have enjoyed less success this season than their astonishing six-trophy run in 2019-20, but they have remained the most consistent team in the league led by Lewandowski.

It is also the second consecutive league crown for coach Hansi Flick, who is leaving Bayern at the end of the season and will be replaced by Julian Nagelsmann.

Chelsea Women are plotting a move for Manchester United’s Lauren James – sister of men’s star Reece

Chelsea Women are plotting a move for Manchester United teenager Lauren James – sister of men’s star Reece – with Lyon also in the hunt for the talented forward

  • Chelsea will play Bayern in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final
  • The Blues are looking to strengthen their team by making Lauren James a target
  • A move to Kingsmeadow would see the 19-year-old unite her with brother Reece
  • However, Lyon are also thought to have expressed their interest in the forward

Chelsea head into this weekend’s Champions League semi-final second leg against Bayern Munich with plans to strengthen their squad further – having made Manchester United’s promising teenager Lauren James a possible target.

A move to Kingsmeadow would see the 19-year-old unite her with brother Reece, who plays for the men’s side.

Lyon are also thought to have expressed interest in the forward, who would secure United a record transfer fee if she does leave this summer.

James has been out of action with an injury recently but scored on the second game of her comeback to a side who have fallen off the pace, having lead the WSL table before Christmas.

Jamaica are attempting to capitalise on England’s decision to drop Manchester United’s James for this month’s internationals by inviting her join them instead.

She and her brother became the first brother and sister to be called up by England in November 20. But the elder of the siblings did not make her full debut and was then dropped entirely this month.

Jamaica, who have risen from 119 to 51 in the world rankings since 2017, want James to join the camp they will hold either in Bilbao or Madrid from June 7 to 15. They would consider attracting her to be a huge coup.

PSG: Kylian Mbappe given THREE out of 10 in L’Equipe’s Champions League ratings

Kylian Mbappe given THREE out of 10 in L’Equipe’s savage Champions League ratings… as they claim PSG striker ‘did not exist’ in first leg defeat to Man City (in which he had LESS touches than City goalkeeper Ederson!)

Kylian Mbappe was savaged as ‘non-existent’ and awarded a match low score of 3/10 by French newspaper L’Equipe after Paris Saint-Germain suffered defeat in their Champions League semi-final first leg with Manchester City.

The 22-year-old, who was the star of the previous round against Bayern Munich, failed to register a single shot on target against City at the Parc des Princes.

Mbappe had recovered from injury to play but found his explosiveness nullified against City’s defensive pairing of John Stones and Ruben Dias – and L’Equipe were far from impressed with the striker’s contribution.

It was the first Champions League match Mbappe has started in his young career that he failed to register a single shot on target.

He was so peripheral to proceedings, in fact, that he managed just 30 touches, a game low for starters on both sides. For context, City goalkeeper Ederson finished with 31 touches in the 2-1 win for the English side.

Mbappe’s form was good, eight goals in five games before City crossed the channel, and so his confidence was sky-high.

But this was a reality check in the biggest moment and he will be expected to make up for it with a thrilling performance in the return leg.

L’Equipe’s judgement of Mbappe’s first leg contribution was so scathing, he was rated lower than Idrissa Gueye, who was shown a straight red in the second half for a nasty challenge down the back of Ilkay Gundogan’s Achilles.

Neymar and Leandro Paredes, who both impressed in a dominant first 45 minutes, finished with ratings of 4/10, as did goalkeeper Keylor Navas, who came in for criticism for his positioning for the equalising goal by Kevin De Bruyne.

Despite playing a key role in keeping Mbappe on the edge of the action, Stones’ performance did little to impress those in L’Equipe’s HQ as the City centre back was awarded a 5/10 for his 90-minute contribution.

Joao Cancelo and Kyle Walker, both of which found life very tricky at full-back against Neymar and Angel Di Maria, finished with 4/10 scores – not that they will care too much as City took a major step towards the final in Istanbul.

Mistakes cost PSG as they imploded second half and boss Mauricio Pochettino was at a loss to explain just what happened.

‘It is difficult for them to explain why we were better in the first half, but they were more consistent in second half,’ he told BT Sport.

‘I think it was difficult for us to cope with the demand and the physical condition.

‘They were a little bit more aggressive, and it was difficult for us to recover the ball, sometimes it was a lot of possession for Manchester City, and of course it made it difficult to play.

‘We didn’t show the energy you need when you recover the ball to keep possession and try to force them go deep.’

Julian Nagelsmann closes in on Bayern Munich job as Bundesliga champions ‘agree deal with Leipzig’

BREAKING NEWS: Bayern Munich announce Julian Nagelsmann as their new manager after sealing world-record £21.7m compensation deal with RB Leipzig… and after Champions League winner Hansi Flick agreed to terminate contract to quit for Germany

Julian Nagelsmann has been announced as Bayern Munich’s new manager after the Bundesliga giants agreed a world-record £21.7million compensation package with RB Leipzig.

Nagelsmann agreed personal terms with the German champions on Monday, before a huge pay-off was sealed and the deal was announced on Tuesday morning.

The news will come as a huge blow to Tottenham in their search for a new manager, with the German high on their list of potential candidates.

Nagelsmann has impressed at the helm of RB Leipzig, guiding them to a third-placed finish last season, while this time around they sit second with five games to play.

The 33-year-old’s stock is very high and he is seen as one of the most promising young managers in world football.

Nagelsmann has a 58 per cent win percentage with Leipzig during his two years at the club, having won 53 out of his 90 matches in charge, while he also impressed at Hoffenheim in his debut managerial job before that.

Current Bayern boss Flick announced earlier this month that he wants his contract terminated at the end of the season, with last season’s Treble-winning manager strongly linked to the Germany national team role.

Flick told reporters on April 17: ‘I told the team today that I informed the club during the week, after the game in Paris, I would like to terminate my contract at the end of the season.’

PSG captain Marquinhos ‘fit enough to start’ crucial Champions League semi-final

PSG captain Marquinhos ‘fit enough to start’ crucial Champions League semi-final first leg against Manchester City after overcoming adductor problem that kept him out against Bayern

  • Marquinhos had to sit out the quarter-final second leg against Bayern Munich
  • He scored in the first leg but was later forced off with an adductor problem
  • The Brazilian returned to training and is reportedly fit enough to face Man City
  • Mauricio Pochettino’s side are in Paris first before the return leg in Manchester

Paris Saint-Germain will reportedly be able to call upon captain Marquinhos from the start against Manchester City in Wednesday’s Champions League semi-final first leg after he recovered from injury.

L’Equipe report the centre back has handed boss Mauricio Pochettino a major boost in regaining his fitness in time for the last four meeting at the Parc des Princes.

Marquinhos scored a crucial away goal in the last round against Bayern Munich before disaster struck and he picked up an injury which kept him out of the second leg.

The defender has been resigned to the stands since that win in Munich on April 7 but is now ready to return to the fold for PSG’s biggest game of the season.

Goalkeeper Keylor Navas, who signed a new deal this week to remain in Paris, is also reportedly in contention to come back into the side.

Navas was given a rest for the midweek French Cup win over Angers having previously nursed a shoulder injury.

He missed last Sunday’s Ligue 1 win over Saint-Etienne with the issue and was rested as a precaution ahead of facing Pep Guardiola’s side.

It is hoped Kylian Mbappe, who limped off at the weekend, has shaken off any problems in time to play a key role on Wednesday night.

Pochettino took over mid-season but has impressed, particularly in Europe, by knocking out Barcelona and Bayern Munich, the reigning champions.

PSG know they are two games away from back-to-back Champions League and Pochettino knows this is the competition above all else that their Qatari owners are desperate to win.

‘The target in the last 10 years has been to win the Champions League and the club is working really hard to try to be there and win,’ he said. ‘It is that last step, which is always the most difficult.

‘If you remember at Tottenham, it was always about the last step being the most difficult thing. But Paris Saint-Germain is there and now it is about winning. I love to feel this. I love to feel that you need to win every single game.’

Bayern Munich ‘agree terms with Julian Nagelsmann to become their new manager this summer’

Bayern Munich ‘agree terms with Julian Nagelsmann to become their new manager this summer’ in major blow to Tottenham, as German giants ‘continue talks with RB Leipzig over £26m fee’ for in-demand boss who still has two years left on his deal

Bayern Munich have moved a step closer to hiring Julian Nagelsmann as their new manager after reportedly agreeing personal terms with him.

According to BILD, both parties have spoken and are happy with the plans in place for him to replace the outgoing Hansi Flick this summer.

Bayern now have to see eye-to-eye with Nagelsmann’s current employers RB Leipzig – who are set to be stubborn in negotiations with their domestic rivals.

RB Leipzig are demanding £26million to release Nagelsmann from his contract two years early to its expiration in order to join Bayern.

That astronomical fee would be a world-record compensation fee for a coach – highlighting the clamour for Nagelsmann.

The German is only 33 but has impressed at Hoffenheim and Leipzig and can also count Tottenham among his suitors – with the Premier League club reportedly keen on him following the dismissal of Jose Mourinho earlier this month.
