Danny Wilson and Tabai Matson join John Dobson on Harlequins’ four-man shortlist for a new head coach – as the search to find Paul Gustard’s replacement continues

  • Harlequins are on the lookout for a new head coach since Paul Gustard left
  • Gustard left his role in January with Quins looking for a low-profile appointment
  • Rassie Erasmus was an early target but talks are understood to have collapsed

Harlequins have added Danny Wilson and Tabai Matson to a four-man shortlist for their new head coach.

The club have already been linked with South African John Dobson, following the early exit of Paul Gustard in January.

World Cup winning Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus was an early target, but those talks are understood to have fallen through.

Glasgow’s Danny Wilson is on Harlequins’ four-man shortlist for a new head coach

The club are now looking at a lower-profile appointment to compliment the coaching group behind their recent play-off push.

New Zealand Sevens coach Clark Laidlaw could become another option after this summer’s Olympic Games.

Meanwhile, Bristol are understood to have expressed an interest to Sale about the future of winger Denny Solomona.

Quins are yet to find a replacement for Paul Gustard who left his role at The Stoop in January

‘My daughter’s lovely but it could be her!’ Vicky McClure’s mother Carol admits DI Kate Fleming could be the elusive H as 11 million people prepare for final episode of Line Of Duty

  • More than 11 million people are expected to tune in when the fate of Line Of Duty’s ‘bent copper’ Joanne Davidson is revealed

Line Of Duty star Vicky McClure’s mother admits even she is in the dark regarding the identity of the elusive H – and believes it could be her own daughter.

The hit BBC show draws to a potentially indefinite close when the final episode of its sixth series ends on Sunday evening.

But after weeks of conjecture regarding who shady criminal mastermind H actually is, facilities manager Carol McClure – who lives just a stones throw from her daughter in their native Nottingham – doesn’t rule out the possibility of it being DI Kate Fleming.

No idea: Line Of Duty star Vicky McClure’s mother Carol admits even she is in the dark regarding the identity of the elusive H – and believes it could even be her own daughter

She told The Mirror: ‘We don’t know anything, 100% not. We don’t know who H is, absolutely not, she’s keeping that in the bag!

‘Who knows? My daughter’s lovely but it could be her, it could be anybody. We love it and watch it like everybody else and it will be just as much of a surprise for us. We wouldn’t want to be in a position to know.’

The proud mother added: ‘We’re big fans of the show, we’ve watched all of them. In fact, we watch everything’s Vicky’s been in.’

Carol also admitted she was genuinely concerned for the health and safety of her daughter – who has starred in every series of Jed Mercurio’s hit show – while she filmed her final episodes during lockdown on location in Belfast.

She said: ‘I worried about her while she was away, we were worried for each other. But I know they were keeping her safe so there was no problem. She was being looked after.’

More than 11 million people are expected to tune in when the fate of Line Of Duty’s ‘bent copper’ Joanne Davidson is revealed on Sunday – but the actress who plays her will not be watching.

The 45-year-old star added: ‘It’s not like I don’t ever watch anything that I have done.

One mother whose daughter attends an independent school in North London said she was facing a £400 bill, even though the teenager will not be sitting her GCSE exams in June.

Meanwhile state schools are demanding significant rebates.

Boards have said they will return a portion of the money, but last year only a quarter was handed back.

The exam boards said the fees also paid for training and supporting schools.

Boris Johnson ‘will spend billions of pounds to save the Union’

Boris Johnson ‘will spend billions of pounds improving road and rail links to Scotland to save the Union’ and see off threat of independence referendum as Nicola Sturgeon’s hopes of winning a majority are on a knife edge

  • Boris Johnson plans to spend billions of pounds on infrastructure to save Union
  • PM expected to implement plans in the wake of Thursday’s Holyrood elections
  • Poll shows SNP heading for victory but winning majority could be on knife edge
  • Fear an SNP majority will see Nicola Sturgeon immediately demand IndyRef2

Billions of pounds will be spent on improving road and rail links to Scotland under plans being put forward by Boris Johnson to strengthen the Union, it was claimed today.

The Prime Minister is said to be preparing to splash the cash on better infrastructure in a desperate bid to see off the threat of Scottish independence.

The Government is also looking at treating Scottish NHS patients on beds in England to deal with an operations backlog while UK diplomats in foreign capitals will be told to stress the case against independence.

The plans could also see a student exchange programme set up between the UK nations.

News of the PM’s plans, first reported in The Sunday Telegraph, came amid fears of a an SNP landslide victory at Thursday’s Holyrood election.

However, a new poll suggests that while Nicola Sturgeon’s party is on course for victory, her chances of winning a crucial majority appear to be on a knife edge.

Boris Johnson, pictured on a visit to a school in London on April 29, is said to be preparing to spend billion of pounds improving transport links to Scotland

Winning a majority is seen as key because Ms Sturgeon believes it would give her a mandate to hold a second independence referendum.

Falling short of the benchmark would strengthen Mr Johnson’s hand and bolster his position of refusing to grant permission for a re-run of the 2014 vote.

Mr Johnson is due to chair a meeting attended by Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Minister for the Cabinet Office Michael Gove, as well as the secretary of states for Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland, when his Union plans will be finalised.

The proposals are then expected to be rolled out in the aftermath of the ‘Super Thursday’ elections.

There are concerns in Westminster that Ms Sturgeon will immediately demand an independence referendum should she secure a majority.

One senior Government source told The Sunday Telegraph that the result is likely to be ‘bloody awful’ in Scotland and ‘we are in a bare knuckle fight’.

There are hopes in Whitehall that Ms Sturgeon will fall short of a majority, potentially torpedoing her demands for a second border poll.

One minister told the newspaper: ‘If you have a combined Lib-Lab-Con vote of over 50 per cent, then that is very significant.’

A highly-anticipated ‘Union connectivity review’ conducted by former Network Rail boss Sir Peter Hendy is due to report by July.

The work will include a feasibility study on establishing a permanent tunnel or bridge connecting Scotland and Northern Ireland.

It came as a Panelbase survey for The Sunday Times suggested Mrs Sturgeon is on course for victory on Thursday but that whether she wins a majority could be tight.

The poll, conducted between April 28 and April 30 suggested the SNP could gain two seats on their 2016 tally, giving them an outright majority of just one.

Sir John Curtice, professor of politics at Strathclyde University, said the polling numbers suggested the SNP could end up with 65 seats, the Tories down three with 28, Labour down six with 18, the Lib Dems up one with six, the Greens up three with nine and the Alba Party with three.

Bride and groom sparks a heated debate for asking guests to contribute to their honeymoon fund

Bride and groom sparks heated debate for asking guests to pay for their honeymoon instead of buying them a gift – so do you agree?

  • Bride and groom sparks debate for asking guests to pay for their honeymoon
  • One guest revealed she was invited to both the wedding and the bridal shower
  • She was confused after the couple asked for honeymoon fund instead of gifts
  • Asked whether to make one large payment – or split it into two transactions
  • But not everyone agreed with paying the newlywed’s holiday

A bride and groom have sparked a heated debate on social media after asking wedding guests to pay for their honeymoon instead of buying them a gift.

One guest shared her dilemma in an Australian Facebook group after she was invited to both the wedding and the bridal shower.

However, she was left confused after the couple asked guests to contribute to their honeymoon fund by transferring the money through an app after they opted out of having a gift registry.

The guest asked the internet whether she should make one large payment for the the bride and groom – or split the money into two transactions for each event.

Poll

Would you contribute to a couple’s honeymoon fund?

But not everyone agreed with paying the newlywed’s holiday, with one woman saying: ‘They’re asking for payments? I either wouldn’t give one, or it would be a rather small payment.’

‘I know it’s acceptable to ask for money or  gifts but I’m personally not comfortable with it. I’d suggest give one payment and if you don’t want to turn up to the shower empty handed, maybe take a bottle of champagne,’ one suggested.

Another woman suggested asking the couple where they are going for their honeymoon because ‘you aren’t guaranteed where the money is going’.

‘See if you can gift them an experience or add to their restaurant tab. You can even upgrade their hotel suite or get things added like champagne on ice. If they get angry about you doing that, then all they want is the money,’ she said.

However, many defended the bride and groom, saying ‘it’s pretty normal’ for couples to ask for money instead of material gifts.

‘Just make a small payment for each occasion through the app. It’s modern times and this is a pretty standard custom these days,’ one woman wrote.

Another said she believed the couple did nothing wrong by asking guests to contribute to their honeymoon fund.

‘It’s simply saying that if you are planning to give a gift then they would appreciate money. It doesn’t matter what they use it for as it’s a gift,’ she explained.

‘It’s no different to doing a register where you buy what they want… I don’t know why everyone has their knickers in a knot about it.

‘I would just give one amount as normally I would do a bridal shower gift for the bride then wedding gift for the couple. In this case its all going to the couple so only one deposit.’

One woman also agreed with her, saying: ‘I personally don’t have an issue with what she’s requested, I’d rather do that then give something that won’t be utilised.

She said she would do two transactions, one during the bridal shower and the other on the wedding day.

‘I actually think the direct deposit is a great idea. As I personally very rarely ever have cash on me and would have to make a special trip to get it… direct deposit is so much easier,’ she said.

Justin Timberlake pays tribute to creator of ‘It’s Gonna Be May’ viral meme: ‘Look what you started’

Justin Timberlake pays tribute to the creator of ‘It’s Gonna Be May’ viral meme: ‘Look what you started’

Nine years in and the ‘It’s Gonna Be May’ meme seems to be more popular than ever.

So much so that Justin Timberlake actually took to social media to credit the woman who came up with the idea to celebrate the first of May by poking fun at the way he pronounces ‘me’ in NSYNC’s 2000 hit, It’s Gonna Be Me.

Throughout the song, the former NSYNC singer pronounces the word ‘me’ like ‘may.’

Giving credit: Justin Timberlake took to social media on Saturday, May 1, to give props to the creator of the ‘It’s Gonna Be May’ viral meme that’s been a sensation since 2012

Getting a jump on the now annual May 1 tradition, Timberlake first shared a clip from the song on April 30, where he sings the title line, ‘It’s gonna be…’ but had the word ‘me’ edited out.

And then, the following day, he reposted the Twitter thread started by meme creator @astro_kianna [Kianna Davis].

‘Now that it’s ACTUALLY May, I have to give props where they are due. Look what you started @astro_kianna,’ he shared on both Twitter and Instagram.

Obviously feeling honored, Davis shared Timberlake’s Instagram post, but added an apology to the singer for all the attention the meme has gotten on every May 1 since 2012.

‘Can’t believe this. I’ll never forget it (but dude I’m so sorry that you have to see this every year) Love you always,’ she wrote along with a red heart emoji.

Davis kicked off the now annual tradition by paying homage to the five members of NSYNC in the caption of a photo of herself.

‘I never thought one Tumblr post would turn into ALL of this, but I love that we can come together each year to celebrate the best boy band on Earth. So thankful for all of the sweet messages and posts today, and I hope @justintimberlake @lancebass @iamckirkpatrick @realjoeyfatone @jcchasezofficial know how much we love them.’

Later in the day, as comments began to mount up, Davis posted a message to all the Instagram fans and followers, writing, ‘As y’all con imagine – my notifications and inbox are swamped. Trying to get back to everyone but it may take a while.’

She added, ‘Thank you for all of the sweet comments/messages,’ along with five purple hearts.

Davis created the viral meme when she was in college in 2012. She attached an old photograph of Timberlake with ‘It’s Gonna Be May’ written across the bottom of her personal calendar near the last day of April.

In Timberlake’s defense, he has claimed he sang the titular line, ‘it’s gonna be me,’ with a distinctive twang because the song’s co-writer, Max Martin, instructed him to do so.

‘I think he just wanted me to sound like I was from Tennessee,’ the singer, who hails from Tennessee, told a British radio station in 2016.

How a family trip to SeaWorld and a seemingly harmless souvenir ended in tragedy

How a fun day at SeaWorld turned into a tragedy for a Gold Coast family FOUR days after visiting the theme park – as Deklan, 6, fights for his life after becoming entangled in a seemingly harmless souvenir from the trip

  • Six-year-old Deklan Babington-MacDonald received the toy at SeaWorld
  • The family visited the park a few days before the accident at home with the toy
  • Deklan became entangled in part of the toy and his heart stopped for an hour
  • The boy remained on life support for a number of days before he was let go

In making a visit to SeaWorld, six-year-old Deklan Babington-MacDonald was doing what thousands of Gold Coast locals do every weekend, little knowing that a souvenir of his trip would prematurely end his life.

While the Gold Coast is famous as the home of Australia’s biggest theme parks, SeaWorld is the most popular with locals because it’s conveniently located on The Spit not far from Surfer’s Paradise.

The six-year-old was playing with the toy at home on ANZAC Day when the accident occurred

SeaWorld is a popular theme park for locals on the Gold Coast because of its close location

DreamWorld and MovieWorld, by comparison, are located at Coomera on the northern Gold Coast and require bigger planning for a ‘day trip’. When the kids are crawling up the walls, SeaWorld is the easy option for a couple of hours of entertainment out of the house.

Dolphins, penguins, polar bears, seals and sting rays never fail to entertain young children.

Deklan likely reached into the open touch pool at ever-popular Ray Reef, where visitors can pat the backs of sting-rays as they glide around the pool.

He would have pressed his face to glass at Tropical Reef Lagoon to see the large, fearsome sharks swim past his nose. And watched the antics of polar bears Hudson, Nelson and juvenile bear Mishka at Polar Bear Shores.

Perhaps it was while visiting the Penguin Encounter, an indoor exhibit where you can watch cheeky King and Gentoo penguins from above, or while they swim through an underwater viewing window, that Deklan got the idea to ask for the penguin toy involved in his horrific accident a few short days later.

Like any theme park, merchandise is part of the day. Visitors can only exit the park through a large gift shop full of plushie penguins and polar bears, t-shirts, mugs and key-rings.

More merchandise shops and smaller stalls are scattered throughout the property. The toy believed to have been involved in Deklan’s terrible accident – a penguin with a harness attached to a metre-long lead pole – is often seen hanging from a mobile stand outside the smaller ‘pop-up’ merch stalls near the big attractions such as the polar bears.

It’s a common sight to see children ‘walking’ their stuffed penguin or polar bear on the pole through SeaWorld’s vast car park as they leave for the day.

Details of how Deklan managed to use the toy in a way which ended his short life remain unclear but the boy’s cousin Lea Williams said the family expected there would be a coronial inquiry into the accident.

Gold Coast police told Daily Mail Australia there were no suspicious circumstances in their initial investigation of the accident, having been called to Deklan’s home last Sunday.

A fundraising campaign set up to support Deklan’s mother Lauren had raised close to $12,500 on Friday afternoon. Donations can be made here

Daily Mail Australia first alerted SeaWorld to the role of its toy in Deklan’s accident, prompting a statement on Thursday which said the theme park was ‘distressed’ by the boy’s tragic accident and announcing the toy would be withdrawn from sale for the time being.

‘We need to understand the circumstances around what has occurred and will be fully cooperating with any investigation,’ the statement read.

‘We will also be reaching out to Deklan’s family to offer support. We will not be making any further comment until all the facts are known.’

The principal of Deklan’s school, William Duncan State School, would not comment when approached by Daily Mail Australia but all students have been offered access to counselling.

‘As a school community, we will rally together and support each other, while respecting the family’s privacy during this most challenging of times,’ wrote Principal Regan Gant in a letter to parents.

Jurgen Klopp begs Holland not to risk Virgil van Dijk’s career by picking him for Euro 2020

Jurgen Klopp begs Holland not to risk Virgil van Dijk’s career by picking him for Euro 2020 after Liverpool defender posted clip of himself running on the training ground as he continues recovery from knee injury that has kept him out since October

  • Virgil van Dijk has been out since suffering the injury back on October 17
  • Dutch defender ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in game with Everton
  • It was originally hoped Van Dijk might return before end of Liverpool’s season
  • But that appears unlikely despite the defender running again in training
  • Jurgen Klopp has urged Holland not to pick Van Dijk for the Euros this summer

Jurgen Klopp has urged Holland not to jeopardise Virgil van Dijk’s career by rushing him back for this summer’s European Championship.

The Dutch defender has been sidelined since October with a ruptured cruciate ligament and is unlikely to play for Liverpool before the end of the season.

That’s despite Van Dijk exciting fans by posting a video of himself running on the training ground last week as he continued his recovery.

Van Dijk, 29, is Holland’s captain but Klopp believes it is too risky to select him for the rearranged Euro 2020 tournament, which begins on June 11.

The Liverpool manager said: ‘I don’t want to hold Virgil back but you can’t force it as well. You are all long enough in the business to know that if you want to play you have to train before – and proper football training.

‘It takes weeks. Not a week before. You cannot be 10 or 11 months out, train for one week and then play football. That is not possible, it should not be possible.

‘No one is holding Virgil back – I can promise all the people in Holland that we cannot force it, and we will not.

‘We speak about a player and his career, so nobody should force it and nobody will.

‘Not Holland, not us and not Virgil as well. It’s just about getting as fit as possible.

‘Nobody knows at the moment when that will be exactly, but you can imagine for sure it will be very, very tight with the Euros because he is not in team training yet and will not be in the next few weeks.

‘So I don’t know. But in the end it’s a decision of Virgil and he will get massively influenced by the feeling in his knee.’

Van Dijk has been out after damaging the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee following a challenge by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park on October 17.

The defender required surgery and has spent time in Dubai during his rehabilitation. But initial optimism that he would return before the end of the season and prove his fitness for Euro 2020 has faded.

His absence had a major effect on Liverpool’s Premier League title defence and they are fighting to qualify for next season’s Champions League as they head to Old Trafford to play Manchester United on Sunday.

De Boer insists that the final decision will rest with the player and he needs to submit his squad list for the tournament – featuring 26 names instead of the usual 23 – by June 1.

Holland play Scotland on June 2 and Georgia on June 6 in warm-up matches before they begin their tournament against Ukraine in Amsterdam on June 13. Austria and North Macedonia also feature in their group.

Speaking to Daily Mail Australia, an onlooker said: ‘[Pip and Cameron] weren’t packing on the PDA in the street, but they certainly looked like a new couple on a first date.’

‘Her car was parked outside his house in the morning, so it seemed like she stayed the night,’ they added.

The sighting came just days after Pip shut down rumours she was dating Cameron – who was spotted leaving her Bondi home on two occasions late last month.

The mother of one said via a spokeswoman she was just friends with Cameron.

When approached for comment on the sightings, Pip’s representative Louise Gaffikin told Daily Mail Australia: ‘Pip and Cameron are friends. No further comment.’

In a bizarre twist, Cameron, who co-owns the Rocker restaurant on Campbell Parade in North Bondi, is actually a longtime friend of Pip’s ex-partner, fashion designer Dan Single.
