Shaun Murphy has one foot in his first Crucible quarter-final for six years.
The 2005 champion has not got past the World Championship second round since finishing runner-up to Stuart Bingham in 2015.
The Magician was in superb form for most of the first two sessions against 21-year-old Masters champion Yan Bingtao.

But the Chinese prospect kept himself in the contest by fighting back from 8-2 down to 10-6.
Murphy made early breaks of 109, 144, 88 and 68. But his best effort in the last six frames was just 54 as Yan took four of them.
Three-time champion Mark Selby leads former Masters champion Mark Allen 9-6 overnight ahead of their final session.
The pair were unable to complete the scheduled eight frames and were hauled off early before evening play.
Selby established an 8-4 lead before Northern Ireland’s Allen cut the deficit to 8-6.
